Here are a few things we have been up to at Mendip Green this week...
Team work makes the dream work! EYFS have been making the most of their new sandpit! We had a HUGE sand delivery and the children helped to transport the sand to their new sandpit! Trays, buckets and wheelbarrows - anything they could fill with sand was used! The children have been making the most of digging, scraping, burying and sweeping in their new space.
Year 1 are doing an excellent job accessing their outdoor learning space with such confidence, and are becoming so independent at completing their star tasks during their explore time too. We are so proud of them all!
Year 2 have been working hard using their number bonds to 10 to add 2 and 3 numbers together.
This term Year 3 have been learning about pneumatic devices in DT. They learnt about different examples of pneumatic devices. Then thought carefully about the design criteria and designed and painted their boxes accordingly. Classes have started testing them out by exploring how air pressure from a balloon can create movement by lifting and closing the lid of a box.
Year 4 have rounded up their Jigsaw learning for the term by making posters about how to be a good team.
Year 5 took part in a fire safety workshop with Charlotte from Avon and Somerset Fire and Rescue this week. The children enjoyed a range of activities focusing on fire and water safety in the home and when out and about!
Year 6 have started the design process for their bags. They are loving being fashion designers and they are getting lots of inspiration from their fashionable teachers 🙄
A BIG SHOUT OUT: Mrs Berry has been at Mendip for a whole term and is well and truly part of the team... she has been incredibly busy with school tours and is about halfway through teaching a session in every class (which is quite a challenge with 21 classes)! Bring on term 2 and Christmas shows galore!

Mendip Green School

We were due to have our first ‘safe outside’ alarm practice (fire drill) tomorrow. As with the first practice at the beginning of every school year, we would normally give the children prior warning and talk them through the process beforehand, reminding them what they need to do when the alarm sounds and explaining what the adults around them will do to keep everyone safe.
Unfortunately, we were beaten to it today when there was a false alarm during lunchtime. This meant the children had not had the usual reminder or preparation beforehand. However, they were absolutely brilliant. They listened carefully to staff and followed instructions to evacuate the building and playgrounds safely, making their way quickly and calmly to their designated muster points. We could not have asked any more of them.
Everyone was safely accounted for and, within five minutes, the children were back enjoying their lunches and playtime as normal.
We appreciate that some children may mention the alarm when they come home today, so we wanted to let you know what had happened and reassure you that there was no fire or other emergency. Most importantly, we were incredibly proud of the calm and sensible way the children responded to an unexpected situation.
